On the afternoon of January 4, on the eve of the Cavalgade, at 6:30 in the afternoon and from the main theater, the «Pregó del Tío Piam» takes place, in which this popular character proclaims the arrival of the Royal Ambassador.

A group of men and women of the village, dressed in the traditional clothes of Alcoy, walk alongside the characters of Betlem of Tirisiti, to receive the Ambassador, who runs from seven in the afternoon the main streets of the city announcing the imminent arrival Of Gaspar, Melchor and Baltasar with their little donkeys. Thousands of children wait fervently for the little donkeys to deliver the letter of the wise men. The cavalcade of Alcoy is a celebration of National Tourist Interest and declared Intangible Property of Cultural Interest.

It has been celebrated since 1885, although its documentary history dates back to the year 1866. It is one of the Oldest Three Kings’ Cavalcades in Spain and, possibly, in the world. On the evening of the 5th, the Three Wise Men of the East make their solemn entrance in the city of Alcoy mounted on their camels. The parade of musicians, men with torches, shepherds and pages that go up long stairs to access the balconies of the houses and deliver the gifts to the children is really exciting.

The king Baltasar known as “the King Negre” walks in the center of the entourage between the other two monarchs. The entourage arrives at “Plaza España” about eight o’clock, and the sovereigns descend from their mounts to go to the Nativity. The moment of Adoration to the Child Jesus is adorned with the effect of the flares distributed among the public, and the act is solemnized with fireworks and with the interpretation of Handel’s ‘Messiah’. The cavalcade, overflowing with illusion and magic takes over each and every corner of this city touched by magic.
